Clear vs White Shrinky Dinks

shrinky dinks diy storm troopers star warsMy new favorite crafting material are Shrinky Dinks – draw on a sheet of plastic and put it in the oven and voilà you have your own hard plastic. Whaaat?! 😀 stormtrooper diy star wars earringsI’ve made my first pairs of earrings for my oldest Star Wars Birthday party. Also made the kids Jedi badges, after they completed the training at the party. I’ve tried them both, the clear and white version. Below you can see the clear version and top is the white version. I just made a pair for Valentine’s Day earrings with simply a red sharpie, again with white Shinky Dink Paper, because it will bring out the colors better. heart earings shrinky dinks diyHere are some tips, I learned from my experience with crafting with the 2 different Shrinky Dinks papers (clear and white):

  • Use sharpies,  any water content in your pens will make your plastic wave
  • The white paper doesn’t shrink as much as the clear. Make sure you test the sizing of your work.
  • Test the timing on your Shrinky Dinks. It makes a difference if you place your paper on a cool baking sheet or a warm/pre-heated baking sheet.
  • Keeping white in too long turns them yellow-brownish – I only kept mine in for 1 minute
  • The white doesn’t take as long as the clear to shrink.
  • The clear creates a structure one side, white is smooth and shiny on both sides
  • You will see glue spots on clear Shinky Dinks- I used a double-sided sheet to attach felt on my badges.
  • Acrylic paint reacts different on clear vs white shrinky dinks.

I hope the tips were useful for you!! Oh the endless possibilities! ❤heart diy shrinky dinks

Fall is here…Winter is coming

I’ve kept myself quiet busy especially with sewing for Elliott. For some reasons when the weather gets gray and dark, I start knitting. I don’t touch my knitting needles all summer. So this year, it was no different, rain and dark Sundays at home made be check my wool stash and I started knitting again.  I bought last year yarn, with the intention to knit a hat for Elliott from a pattern I found on Ravelrly, but I didn’t have the guts to do this until this year.

The first one I did was too small for Elliott, so I ended up doing another one and “yeah” success, as you can see in the picture.

I also sewed a new west for him, for the days for the weather is in between. Not cold enough for the winter jacket but not warm enough for only a fleece jacket.

I used my own pattern, which I used for the Denim Jacket I created a while ago. I lined the jacket with fleece to keep it nice and warm. The outside is out of a polyester print. I added a little patch on the chest, which I bought at vintage mall. I also added pocket, which is not functional at all. Sometimes you just need  to add a little accessoire.

Treatbags for Valentine’s Day

The last couple years we’ve been exchanging little gifts and treats on Valentine’s Day at work. I wanted to create something you can reuse and is different than the usual candy or paper bags.

I’ve created bags with a vintage picture on the front. The image is ironed on. I just simply printed on Fabric Transfer Paper with my ink yet printer.

I also created a couple of bags with lace. Not everybody has printable iron on transfer sheets at home. You can use any kind of lace, cotton, polyester, vintage, or just ribbon.

I’ve create about 30 bag in one night because it’s really simple.

I filled the bags with chocolate hearts. And used bakers thread to tie them.

Instead of filling the bags with treats and sweets, you can also fill the bags with Lavender. It has a calming effect and people can use it to put it between their linen (in between wool and it will keep the moth away over summer.)
